Setting Up With Cloud9 IDE

ATTENTION: Since the creation of this course, Cloud9 was acquired by Amazon, and is now AWS Cloud9. However, Upskill has a special educational account with the original Cloud9. Watch this video but DO NOT try to follow the steps in this video. See below and follow the steps carefully to get your free Cloud9 account.

Here, we'll take a deep dive into how web apps work. Don't worry about trying to understand the syntax for now. The purpose here is just to get an orientation of what it feels like to actually write a few lines of code.

Read these instructions carefully:

Since Amazon has acquired Cloud9, the signup process has changed and the new version (called AWS Cloud9) is not very easy to use. Not to worry! We have an official educational account with the original Cloud9 and we built a tool that will give you a free account to the original interface - the one used in this course, so that your screen looks identical to the instructor's screen.

To get your free Cloud9 account. Follow these instructions carefully:

  1. Wait until you see a form field in the box below (this may take a minute as the server needs to boot up).
  2. Enter your email address and submit the form.
  3. Check your email inbox in about 5 minutes and you should have an invitation to setup a Cloud9 account.
  4. Go through the quick and easy signup process on the Cloud9 website - near the final step, you may see a warning about a 50 member team limit. You can safely ignore that, as it does not apply!
  5. Look for a link to your Cloud9 dashboard (may be at the top right of the Cloud9 website once you've completed the signup process), and you're all set!
  6. Bookmark or safely keep your login information and the URL: https://c9.io/login so that you can always log back into the original Cloud9 (as opposed the new Amazon AWS Cloud9). Happy coding!
